The Black Knight is extraordinary of the longest-running characters in the Wonder Universe, having debuted in the late '60s, and helium's also the heir of an in-story legacy dating back to the time of King Arthur. And now Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, who debuted in the MCU in Eternals, now streaming on Disney Plus, is poised to step into the role of the Black Horse on photographic film rightful A he did in humourous books, perhaps sooner rather than tardive.
Dane Whitman, Marvel's best-known character to take on the identity of the Black Dub, may non be a household describ just yet. But he's one of the longest-irremovable comic book Avengers - having even led the team at combined point - and he's the bearer of a mantelpiece that goes book binding hundreds of years into the past of the Marvel Universe.
With Dane Whitman now in the MCU and on the road to becoming the Black Knight, it's the idyllic clock to become familiar with one of Marvel's nigh unsung mythologic legacies, and how Black Knight's storey could come to the MCU - including his surprising connections to the X-Men.

Who is the Black Knight, Dane Whitman
Dane Whitman first debuted in 1967's Avengers #47 as a human super-scientist. Non sooner or later the Black Dub, Whitman is first seen working on a serial publication of experiments he hopes will give him the power to atone for the misdeeds of his uncle Nathan Garrett, the former bearer of the Black Knight mantle.
Arsenic the Black Knight, Garrett was a supervillain and a phallus of the original Masters of Evil. Later on Garrett died in a fight with Ironman, Whitman inherited the bequest of the Black Dub, which had been passed down through his family line since the ERA of King Arthur's Camelot when it originated with Whitman's ancestor Sir Percy of Scandia.
Interestingly, Sir Percy of Scandia, the original Black Knight, actually predates Wonder Comics, having debuted in the publisher's Atlas Comics days as a fantasize hero ahead being united into the lore of the Marvel Universe.
Whitman vowed to bring back the mantle to its heroic origins, eventually discovering the harmonious legacy of the Coloured Knight, the so-called Ebony Blade, a sword that was created by Merlin in the era of Camelot.
Spellbound with frightful but noxious power, the Ebony Blade was, for generations, purported to be healthy to be used only away the native of heart (this turned forbidden not to constitute true - we'll excuse the real enchantment of the Sable Steel soon).
As the Black Horse, Whitman wields the Ebony Blade, which is enchanted to castrated through with whatever substance, to protect its wielder from death, and to deflect and defend the wielder from magic. Whitman also rides a winged horse onymous Aragorn, the ware of his genetic experiments (Aragorn has likewise been ridden by Brunhild, the seminal Valkyrie).
Though Walt Whitman chooses to be a hero in the spirit of Sir Percy quite than a baddie like his uncle, he still joins the Masters of Fiendish in his uncle's place with the intent of infiltrating them and bringing them to justice with the Avengers.
But the heroes are incredulous of Whitman's motivations, believing he Crataegus laevigata be planning to double-cross them, until he helps them defeat Kang the Vanquisher, earning a office on the squad for days to come.
The Dark Knight in the Marvel Macrocos
Dane Marcus Whitman first encounters the Avengers when he botches one of his crucial experiments, opening a portal to another realness where none other than Magnetoelectric machine and his henchman Toad are being held captive.
Magneto and Toad attempt to reassemble the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants by calling along Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, the former Brotherhood members turned heroic Avengers. The subsequent fight betwixt the Brotherhood and Globe's Mightiest Heroes sets Whitman on the way of life to discover the Sable Blade and to suit a member of the team himself.
All over the decades, Whitman has come and bypast from the Avengers a few multiplication, though he's been part of individual of the best Avengers rosters ever, even leading the squad awhile in their '90s 'leather jacket' era.
Around this meter, Whitman abandons the Soot black Blade, deciding its curse, which draws proscribed more bloodlust and rage from its wielder the much right they become, is getting too strong to defy (it sorta goes on its own side quest through a few old age of Marvel history in this period) and taking upbound a lightsaber-esque 'Photon Leaf blade,' a sword ready-made of pure energy.
Information technology's also in that era that Whitman becomes connected to the Eternals, starting a romantic relationship with Sersi (played by Gemma Chan in the Eternals film). However, Whitman also became involved with Crystal of the Inhumans, who was besides serving as an Avenger at the time, eventually drawing the ire of Crystal's ex-husband-husband Quicksilver.
With the whole situation weighing on them, Black Knight and Sersi go on to another reality (the alternate comic ledger persistence known as the Ultraverse, which is a whole kettle of comical Quran history fish all its own), leading their own team up thither for a short circuit time ahead returning home base.
Since past, Whitman has made a habit of travel betwixt teams, and yet universes. Along with sojourns through time to the age of Camelot, a journey alongside X-Men adjacent team Excalibur into Otherworld, and a stint in the bizarre fantasy realm known As Weirdworld, Whitman has been a member of the Defenders, the Heroes for Employ, and the special forces team of Captain Britain and Military Intelligence Section 6-13.
Last, the legacy of the Black Knight has been complicated once again thanks to the return of the Sable Sword to Whitman's workforce. In the recent limited serial Blackamoor Horse: Curse of the Ebony Blade, Marcus Whitman discovers that verity power of the Ebony Blade is not to be wielded by somebody who is pure of heart, but by person World Health Organization is easily corrupted by its gloomful power.
Alongside this crisis of conscience, Whitman also learns he has a long-lost daughter called Jackie Chopra from a relationship in his youth, which leads them to reconnect - and to vow to share the Pitch black Steel and their family's legacy as the Pitch-dark Knight.
The Black Knight in the MCU
Dane Whitman has made his MCU debut in Eternals, played by Kit Harington. Though he doesn't become the Black Knight in the flic, a Emily Price Post-credits scene does set up his approaching hero turn by putt the Coal black Blade in his workforce (with a bit of a turn of events from another unexpected Marvel character).
And considering the vast entanglement of connections Marcus Whitman has to other prominent Wonder heroes - including some that haven't debuted yet, but are planned to - thither's groovy reason to believe he could become a paint member of the adjacent incarnation of the Avengers. After all, atomic number 2's combined of single a handful of classic '60s geological era members of the comic book team who haven't made information technology to film up to now (pretty some just him and Hercules).
Whitman's first appearing is tied to the X-Men, thanks to the involvement of Magneto and Batrachian, and he's also got a history with Excalibur - especially Brian Braddock, the other Captain Great Britain/present-day Captain Avalon. And that of course brings raised the concept of Otherworld, a realm of Arthurian magic with connections to the current X-Men run (especially the story 'X of Swords').
Virtually newly, the Ebony Blade was connected to Knull, the former god of symbiotes who was defeated by Malice, also conjunctive the steel to another Marvel Comics weapon, All-Black the Necrosword. All-Black is wielded past Gorr the God-Butcher, villain of the coming Thor: Love and Thunder.
The bequest of the Grim Knight runs through with the history of the Marvel Universe, all the means backmost to the time of Camelot and King Arthur. With the Eternals also tied into Marvel's mystical, mythical secret quondam (including King Arthur who is mentioned in Eternals by name and Excalibur, which is actually seen), it's entirely possible that when Dane Whitman takes finished the Pitch black Blade to become the Black Horse, he'll exposed up a whole different wing of the MCU for exploration.
Black Knight has a history with the Avengers that goes hinder decades. Here are the best Avengers stories of all time.
