15 Subnautica

Along with sustenance, shelter is one of our key requirements when it comes to basic survival. It was perhaps something of an inevitability then that survival games would evolve to the point where base-building has become standard. Subnautica was far from the first to implement it, but it is definitely one of the more unique examples owing to its underwater setting.

There are few restrictions when it comes to designing the size and shape of your base, although, generally speaking, the sky is usually the limit. Those looking for more of an interior design experience might be left wanting by what the game has to offer. If your aim is to build something that looks cool and is fun to explore though, Subnautica definitely has you covered.

What could be better than designing your dream home? Well, how about doing so on a Caribbean Island, perhaps? If that sounds like something that you'd enjoy then Home Design: Caribbean Life is definitely worth a look - even if it's just a momentary glance.

The game's UI is incredibly intuitive and everything looks fantastic. The wide range of furniture and customization options allows for some incredible designs that would make even the odd millionaire a little envious. The beautiful scenery only adds to the game's fantastic visuals which are incredibly impressive for a mobile game.

13 Story Of Seasons: Friends Of Mineral Town

The Harvest Moon series has always excelled when it comes to its customization options. Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is no different in this regard. The recent Switch remake looks fantastic and allows players to not only decorate their homes, but also the areas surrounding them.

If you're a fan of Animal Crossing then you'll love Friends of Mineral Town and may actually find that you prefer it thanks to the game's tighter structure and well fleshed out characters. Sadly, there aren't quite as many items of furniture available nor does the game receive seasonal updates like the AC titles but it's a great game nonetheless.

12 Staxel

Staxel looks and plays like the love-child of Minecraft and Stardew Valley and although it doesn't quite measure up to either of the aforementioned titles, there's still a lot to love here. The vibrant color palette found throughout the game makes for some stunning visuals and there are plenty of craftable items with which homes can be built and decorated.

Some might be put off by the title's complete lack of narrative, but those looking for a game that allows them to unleash their creativity without the distractions that go hand in hand with traditional story modes should have a lot of fun with Staxel. It's a game that's easy to get lost in and one that will help you to find plenty of inspiration thanks to its simplicity.

11 Ark: Survival Evolved

Things might still be a little rough around the edges, but the base-building elements of Ark: Survival Evolved have come a long way since the game first launched. Gone are the days in which players were limited to basic box-like structures with all manner of designs now available right at the players' fingertips.

Perhaps what makes base-building so enjoyable in the game is that your creations need to be functional rather than just aesthetically pleasing. Well, they do if you want them to survive for longer than a few days, that is. Interiors still need a bit of work, perhaps, but with fairly regular updates still rolling in, things can only get better in this regard.

10 The Sims

The Sims is a very popular life-simulator that has been around for years. It's almost the definition of first-time gamers. People play it for many different reasons, whether that be to create ridiculous looking characters and cause havoc on their lives or to get away from reality and into an alternate, calming one.

But there is also the aspect of building. Instead of players focusing on their Sims life and career, they can focus on building houses from the ground up. And if interior design is more ones style, players can simply design already built houses. With the built-in Sims catalog, possibilities are endless for your country bungalow or grand castle.

9 Fallout 4

When Fallout 4 was introduced, so was the idea of building settlements for the commonwealth folk. At first, some players might have been opposed to it since it's a new thing for Bethesda's series, but once creativity hits...

In the above image, JonSwift made an entire pirate ship in the game complete with prisoners, fireworks and more. Games like Fallout 4 have tons of mods to help enhance... Literally anything one would want to enhance and with this comes the ability to create and decorate houses and ships.

8 Terraria

Freaky_daygo on Reddit created a "Japanese styled temple" in Terraria that is over who knows how many pixels wide. This is only a small taste of what players can build in this survival sandbox game.

The game is about defeating bosses, mining, and creating a society almost, but the game gives you many different materials to design housing. From marble blocks and glass windows to palm walls and cactus furniture, players can do just about anything.

7 Minecraft

Minecraft may seem too blocky and basic for creating detailed life and interior homes, but CrafTonishing says otherwise with their modern-day looking bathroom. They made a spanking-new looking bathroom one could only wish to have in real life, just with Vanilla Minecraft. Think of the options to choose from with all the resource packs available to make the blocks look more realistic, cartoonish, or gothic.

Minecraft has always been a game for endless routes of gameplay. Originally a sandbox survival, players can focus solely on creating entire civilizations or just doing some parkour.

6 Animal Crossing

Gamers who have never played Animal Crossing, or maybe jumped on the train for the latest release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, may not understand what the point is. Well there is none. It's to do what you want and enjoy the simple things.

With that comes the ability to decorate your home and pay for upgrades and more rooms. Players could only focus on catching all the fish and have a tent for a house, or they could create the bedroom of their dreams.

5 House Flipper

House Flipper is the ideal if fellow gamers want to get real down and dirty with decorating houses from scratch. In this game, the player is given run down, rancid, cockroach filled houses that are in need of serious repair.

Players have the ability to completely remodel homes from the inside and out into their wildest fantasies, or help customers fix up their own. There is access to a full catalogue of paint, wallpaper, tiles, paintings, house plants, furniture of different themes and colors, and more. This makes House Flipper a good choice if someone wants to go above and beyond.

4 Stardew Valley

What may be a farming game at first glance can turn into the life-sim gamers have been waiting for. Mods like the Elegant Victorian Interior mod transform a humble country home into Audrey Hepburn's fanciful cottage.

Farming and creating relationships are fun and all, but nothing is better than coming home to a cozy, or cutesy, or dark house of your dreams. The game already offers furniture and wallpaper, but some mods can take that a step even further.

3 Home Design 3D

If players want to get even more technical or are even in the interior design field, Home Design 3D gets more in depth with designing and illustrating the ideas in ones head.

Players draw out their ideas, set it in stone and decorate it, then save it and share it. Home Design 3D was made for people who have real life projects and need to work out the kinks and visualize their idea beforehand.

2 Design Home: House Renovation

More of a mini-game that plays with real furniture brands, Design Home: House Renovation is a cellphone game that lets players create realistic rooms with real, existing brands and then go head to head with other players to see whose design is the best.

This game is a good option for players with a creative spark that don't want to sit down and spend too many hours decorating an entire house for the heck of it.

Hearthfire is a DLC that is now automatically in newer versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that allows players to have full creative control of their Skyrim homes.

Previous mentioned games offer more modern takes on home design or offer visions up to the 50's at best. Some gamers hearts lie within the medieval times of moose husks on walls and bear coats on the floors. If darker, grittier times is what you're after then Hearthfire is the place to be to make the best man or woman cave around.
